About Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri Dham is the sacred source of River Yamuna and one of the four holy shrines of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri holds immense religious importance for Hindu devotees seeking spiritual purification and protection from untimely death.
Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri Dham lies at an altitude of approximately 3,293 meters (10,804 feet), nestled amidst dense forests, waterfalls, and majestic Himalayan peaks.
Religious Significance of Yamunotri
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Surya Dev (Sun God) and the sister of Yamraj (God of Death). It is believed that bathing in the sacred waters of Yamuna frees devotees from the fear of death and cleanses all sins.
Sage Asit Muni is said to have lived here, bathing daily in both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, highlighting the spiritual importance of Yamunotri.
Yamunotri Temple Architecture
The Yamunotri Temple was originally built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century and later reconstructed after natural damage. The temple showcases simple yet elegant architecture, perfectly blending with the serene Himalayan surroundings.
The temple houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna.
