About Badrinath Dham
Badrinath Dham is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage destinations and a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is also one of the 108 Divya Desams, making it extremely significant for Vaishnav devotees.
Situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath Dham lies between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, on the banks of the holy Alaknanda River, at an altitude of approximately 3,300 meters (10,827 feet).
Religious Significance of Badrinath
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu meditated at this sacred place while Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri (berry) tree to protect him from harsh weather, giving the place its name — Badrinath.
It is believed that visiting Badrinath Dham washes away sins and grants salvation. The temple is also closely associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who re-established it in the 8th century and placed the idol of Lord Vishnu in the sanctum.
Badrinath Temple Architecture
The Badrinath Temple features a vibrant and distinctive architecture, with a colorful arched façade, intricate carvings, and a gold-gilded roof. The sanctum houses a black stone idol of Lord Badri Vishal seated in a meditative posture.
The temple follows both Vaishnav and Shaivite traditions, making it unique among Char Dham shrines.
