About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites and an essential part of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. It is the holy origin of River Ganga, worshipped as Goddess Ganga. Pilgrims from across India and the world visit Gangotri to seek spiritual purification and divine blessings.

Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Gangotri Dham lies at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level, surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan peaks, pine forests, and the roaring Bhagirathi River.

Religious Significance of Gangotri

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring the sacred Ganga from heaven to earth to cleanse the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva released the river gently through his matted locks, and the river first descended at Gangotri.

The Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, and bathing in the holy waters here is believed to wash away sins and bring peace, prosperity, and salvation.

Gangotri Temple Architecture

The Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. Constructed from white granite stone, the temple features a simple yet elegant architectural style that blends harmoniously with the Himalayan surroundings.

The temple opens only during the yatra season due to heavy snowfall in winter.
