About Kedarnath Dham
Kedarnath Dham is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites and an important part of the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India and holds immense spiritual significance for devotees from all over the world.
Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath Dham sits at an altitude of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level, surrounded by the majestic Garhwal Himalayas and the holy Mandakini River.
Religious Significance of Kedarnath
According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas built the original Kedarnath Temple to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Mahabharata war. The temple is believed to be more than 1,000 years old and was later renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
Kedarnath represents the earth (Prithvi) element among the Panch Kedar temples and is considered extremely powerful for attaining spiritual peace and moksha.
Kedarnath Temple Architecture
The Kedarnath Temple is built from massive stone slabs interlocked without mortar, showcasing ancient Indian architectural brilliance. Despite harsh weather conditions and natural disasters, the temple has stood strong for centuries.
The temple faces south and houses a conical-shaped Shiva Lingam, which is worshipped by thousands of devotees daily during the yatra season.
